Danny and Kathy Wheeler

Danny and Kathy Wheeler

The Bryan-Peak Scholarship is given in honor of the maternal grandparents of Danny and Kathy Reagan Wheeler: Robert and Edith Sellars Bryan and Alexander and Marvel Klasing Peak; and Kathy’s mother, Lou Ellen Peak Reagan.

Our grandparents and mother lived through difficult times in the first half of the 20th century. Never wealthy, but always hard-working and dedicated to their families, they taught their children and grandchildren self-respect and respect for others, the satisfaction of learning, and the joy of living a principled life.

The Bryans were born in Williamson County (IL) and lived in Pittsburg (IL), Washington D.C., and Franklin County (IL). The Peaks were born in Vera and Vandalia, Fayette County (IL) and lived their adult lives in Herrin, Williamson County (IL). Lou Ellen was born in Herrin, served most of her adult life as a school secretary at Southside Elementary and Herrin Junior High School, and was a graduate of SIU’s Vocational Technical Institute (VTI).

They were unfailing in their support of our aspirations and so this scholarship is given as a continuation of that support and encouragement.

Our careers have been dedicated to teaching and to the strengthening of our public schools because they offer great opportunity to all who want to learn. We know your experience at Southern Illinois University will enhance your own opportunities and life. All good wishes.
