Dr. John F. Hayward
Jack and Muriel Hayward came to Carbondale in 1968, when he was invited to begin a religious studies program as part of the philosophy department at SIU. Jack continued to teach in that department until his retirement in 1984. He maintained a strong interest in literature, art and music all his life and was co-founder of the Southern Illinois Chamber Music Society. He also served as honorary minister of Carbondale Unitarian Fellowship for many years, and was instrumental in building the new sanctuary. He was also deeply involved in politics and was one of Paul Simon’s stalwart supporters.
