Duncan Lampan

Duncan Lampan

Duncan came to Southern Illinois University in 1954 to teach in the Vocational Technical Institute. He, along with VTI and its successors, taught courses in machine drafting and design, blueprint reading, statics and strength of materials, construction drawing, structural mechanics and safety. He made a special effort to design performance tests which would reveal student “know-how” and problem-solving abilities.

He earned his Masters of Science Education Degree from SIU in 1956. He always wanted to learn more, taking many courses throughout his life at Iowa State College, SIU and National Science Foundation offerings at the University of Houston and Bucknell University.

Duncan retired in June 1986 after 40-plus years in education from what has become the College of Applied Sciences and Arts as an associate professor.

As hobbies, he enjoyed woodworking; volunteering; refinishing heirloom furniture; gardening; and playing the clarinet in various musical groups, including the John A. Logan Community College Band, a German band, the Southern Illinois Concert Band, and earlier in the SIU Symphony Orchestra. Duncan was a member of SIU Alumni Association and had served on the Scholarship Committee of SIU Emeritus Association.
