Edgar P. Trotter PhD
At the pinnacle of his career, Edgar P. Trotter, PhD, was Acting Associate Vice President, Undergraduate
Programs and Professor, Department of Communications for California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). As
AAVP of Undergraduate Programs, Dr. Trotter was responsible for overseeing all undergraduate curriculum and
supervises the directors for various programs and centers including the University Honors Program, Academic
Advisement Center and Centers for Internships and Community Engagement, among others. He has been a
professor in the Department of Communications for CSUF since 1975, serving as chair from 1983-1990, and was
Director of the university’s Learning Technology Center (LTC) from 1993 to 1997. Dr. Trotter began his teaching
career as an instructor at Murray State University’s Department of Communication in 1970 and later, an instructor
for Southern Illinois University’s School of Journalism in 1974. As an accomplished educator, Dr. Trotter has
been the recipient of multiple grants for the evaluation of various cultural and sociological implications from
communications and journalistic practices. Dr. Trotter holds a Ph.D. in Journalism from Southern Illinois
University, a Master of Science in Journalism from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics
from Murray State University. He is also a former U.S. Navy officer.
Impact
Dr. Trotter personally understands the importance of secondary education, the financial challenges one can face
in the pursuit of higher education, and the difference higher education made in the quality of his own life. Dr.
Trotter has supported Cal State Fullerton students through personal financial challenges so that they can stay in
school toward their career goals and currently has an endowment in his name. Dr. Trotter has given generously
to the SIU Carbondale College of Mass Communication and Media Arts Emergency Scholarship Fund.
