Margot and Erich Schilpp

Margot and Erich Schilpp established the Madelon Golden Schilpp Memorial Scholarship in Journalism in memory of their mother.

Madelon Golden Schilpp was born in Connersville, IN, to Judge George Andrew Golden and writer Edith Fitzgerald Golden. She attended Connersville High School, where was editor of the Connersville High School Clarion, and belonged to the Debate Club, the National Honor Society, and served as president of the Latin Club. She was also president of the Presbyterian Church Young People’s Society. She earned her Bachelor’s degree with Honors at Northwestern University, with a major in English and a minor in Art. She also served as the night editor and reporter for the Daily Northwestern.

She then began a career as a General Assignments Writer for the Chicago Sun-Times and as Director of Publicity for the National Conference of Christians and Jews. She later wrote freelance articles for the Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

After earning her Master’s degree at Southern Illinois University, Schilpp taught at SIU in the Journalism Department. She was senior author of “Great Women of the Press” (Southern Illinois University Press) and co-authored (with Paul Arthur Schilpp) “Reminiscing: Autobiographical Notes of Paul Arthur Schilpp" (Southern Illinois University Press, 1993).

She served as a Trustee, and as President and Vice President of the Carbondale Public Library Board and on the President’s Council Committee at the Southern Illinois University Foundation. She was also a Member of the Executive Board (Southern Illinois Chapter) of the United Nations Association.
