The 1930s was a difficult period for most people living in America. But we had always been poor, my mother a widow, and for us things were always difficult. Perhaps we were not so easily taken aback by the historic depression the country was experiencing. My mother was a school teacher and my aunt a post mistress in a small town. In the late 1800s, and by my family, those were considered successful professional careers. It was certainly easier, and safer, than farming.
