Mrs. Ruth B. Shea

Dr. Edward J. Shea, for whom the Southern Illinois University Natatorium was named in 2001, was the Chair of the Department of Physical Education from 1954-1985. Dr. Shea received the most prestigious professional awards given in Physical Education during his career. He was also the first swimming coach at Southern Illinois University. Dr. Shea competed in Masters Swimming from age 55 through age 88. He bettered or established 29 world records, 32 national records, and nine world titles. He maintained his status as an All-American Masters team member for 18 consecutive years. Throughout his life Dr. Shea was an advocate for an active lifestyle, and encouraged young professionals in the field of Physical Education to experience the joy of movement as he did.
