SIU Aviation Captains Club & Dr. David NewMyer
The Dr. David A. NewMyer Scholarship was established by the SIU Aviation Captains Club to honor the leadership of Dr. David A. NewMyer. Dr. NewMyer began his long and illustrious career with SIU in 1975 when he was hired as a part-time instructor for SIU’s School of Technical Careers Off-Campus Programs. He moved to Carbondale in 1979 becoming a visiting assistant professor in the Aviation Management program. He was selected as the Department Chair of Aviation Management and Flight in 1993 and has now led the program for over 20 years.
Dr. NewMyer, a native of California received his Bachelor degree in History and Government from the University of Redlands. He received a Masters in Political Science from Drew University and a Masters in Transportation from Northwestern University. He completed his Ph.D. in Education Administration and Higher Education at SIU. He has devoted his life to the field of Education and has trained thousands of aviation professionals. His influence is seen worldwide.
University professionals are evaluated by their success in teaching, research and service. Dr. NewMyer is widely recognized for his expertise in Airport Planning and Airline Management. His forty years in the classroom speak for themselves. He is also recognized for his extensive research efforts. To date, he has had 54 published articles and authored 39 technical reports. In addition to his leadership on University matters, Dr. NewMyer has been a tireless volunteer at the local (30+ year member of the DeSoto School Board), state (completed four terms for the Illinois Board of Aeronautical Advisors) and national (long term member of the University Aviation Association) levels.
The SIU Aviation programs are nationally recognized as some of the nation’s best. These programs have been blessed with outstanding, visionary leaders who have taken these programs to new heights. These programs have flourished under Dr. NewMyer’s leadership. He is a true pioneer of the program.
