James and Helen Newby Scholarship

A note from Captain Newby: As a student, I attended SIUC from 1962-1966. In 1964, I had the opportunity to witness the beginning of the SIUC Aviation Program. Although I had obtained my flight ratings prior to the program’s inception, I have fond memories of learning to fly here at the university. I went on to a 37 year career with American Airlines, retiring as a Captain on the Boeing 777. I wanted to do something to honor my father and mother, James and Helen Newby, for their encouragement to follow my dream, for their financial sacrifices, and, most of all for their undying love to all their children. I also wanted to honor the university that was so influential in providing me with the education, both flight and academic, that gave me a start on my aviation career. Therefore, with my wife Doris, I have decided to fund this
scholarship. Good luck in the application process!
