Luebke-Laade Family Scholarship

Cathy Luebke established the Luebke-Laade Scholarship in honor of her family and their enduring commitment to education. As the first in the Luebke family to graduate from college, Cathy deeply believes that every child in this country deserves the opportunity to pursue higher education.

She was fortunate that her parents were able to shoulder most of the financial burden of her schooling. Since Cathy has no children of her own, this scholarship is her way of giving back and supporting future generations.

Cathy earned her degree in journalism from Southern Illinois University in 1973 and went on to enjoy a long and successful career as a reporter and editor for both community and business newspapers. She also worked as an automotive writer.

Her parents, Henry O. “Hank” Luebke and Augusta C. “Gussie” Laade, grew up in Chicago during the Great Depression. Both began working at a young age to help support their families and had limited opportunities for formal education. After World War II—during which Hank served in the Battle of the Bulge—they met, married, and had Cathy, their only child.

Cathy created this scholarship to inspire and support students in completing their education. She is especially proud to assist those studying Mass Communication, recognizing the vital role they play in delivering accurate, objective information to the public.
