Marlene Rotbart Matten Excellence in Health Research Award

The Marlene Rotbart Matten Excellence in Health Research Award is in memory of Marlene Rotbart Matten, a nurse at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, who, while working full-time as Director of Education and raising a family of four children, earned Masters and Doctoral degrees at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. After receiving her degrees, she became Director of Education and Planning at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Her education and nursing skills had a major impact on the southern Illinois region and helped innumerable citizens in the region. Her research on tissue and organ transplantation had an impact far beyond the local region. As a mother, teacher, and nurse she is a wonderful role model for women.


  • The Marlene Rotbart Matten Excellence in Health Research Award is awarded annually to a female graduate student doing health-related research.


The requirements for this award are:

  • The recipient must be a female student who is enrolled in a Masters or Doctoral program with a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0. The undergraduate GPA is to be based on all grades received from all undergraduate schools.
  • During the award period, the recipient must be registered for the minimum number of hours to qualify as a graduate assistant (8 credit hours) except during the last semester of her program. The recipient need not to be registered during the summer semester.
  • A recipient may receive The Marlene Rotbart Matten Excellence in Health Research Award only once.
  • Undergraduate students and those enrolled in MD or JD programs are ineligible.


Applicants must submit the following items to the link below by March 10th.

  • Cover Letter;
  • Copy of official graduate and undergraduate transcripts;
  • Two-page description of proposed research, which must meet the specifications described above;
  • 2 letters of recommendation, including one from your committee chair;
  • Proposed Budget of research costs—A detailed budget and explanation of how money will be spent, including estimates for specific equipment, software, salaries for transcribers or other services, conference fees, etc.

This year, funds available for the award are estimated at $3350 for one, or potentially, two awards.
