Suzanne M. Daughton and Nathan P. Stucky Scholarship

This scholarship award, known as the Suzanne M. Daughton and Nathan P. Stucky Scholarship, (Daughton/Stucky Scholarship) is for the purpose of rewarding academic achievement by graduate students in the Department of Communication Studies.

Dr. Suzanne Daughton, Associate Professor Emeritus, taught for 28 years at SIUC. Dr. Daughton (1963-2020) was an award-winning teacher, given the Outstanding Teacher Award in the College of Liberal Arts; the Feminist Teacher-Mentor Award by the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender; and was recognized twice as with the Outstanding Teacher Award in Speech Communication. Dr. Daughton taught a variety of courses including Rhetorical Criticism, American Public Address, Rhetoric of Social Movements, Gender and Sexuality, and developed a special course in Compassionate Communication for which she became especially well known. She was beloved for the careful editing and notes she wrote on student papers. She listened to students in a way that communicated empathy, understanding, and real concern for their well-being in class and in their lives.

Dr. Nathan Stucky, former department chair and Professor Emeritus, was known for advising and encouraging a wide range of successful graduate students through masters and doctoral degrees. He directed 12 masters degrees, 24 doctoral dissertations, and served on 117 graduate student committees. He was recognized with the Outstanding Teaching Award in Speech Communication in 2008. Dr. Stucky taught courses in Persuasion, Interviewing, Introduction to Graduate Studies, Performance Ethnography, History and Theory of Performance, and other courses in performance studies. He also performed, wrote, and directed performances, including original work, on the Kleinau Theatre stage where he served for over a dozen years as Faculty Director.
