Howard M. and Karri I. Spiegel Swimming Scholarship
The Howard M. and Karri I. Spiegel Swimming Scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Howard (BS ’75, Administration of Justice) & Karri Spiegel. Mr. Spiegel is an Account Manager for the Fortune 150 Company Arrow Electronics in Itasca, IL and a member of the select Arrow Pacesetter Team, an honor given to less than 1 percent of all Arrow employees worldwide.
Originally from the southeast side of Chicago, he moved to the north side where he enjoyed playing high school basketball before coming to SIU Carbondale. Mr. Spiegel graduated from SIU with a BS in Administrative Justice in 1975. He was a Presidential Scholar. While a student he was vice president of his dorm and a member of the University Honors Program.
Mr. Spiegel has served on the Chicago land Advisory Board and the College of Liberal Arts Alumni Society Board. He served as a member of the SIU Alumni Association Board of Directors from 2003 until 2015, including service as Vice President on that board’s Executive Committee. He is currently serving the Alumni Association Board as an emeritus member of their Investment & Scholarship Committees. His service on the SIU Foundation Board, which drew to a close at the end of June 2016, began in 2007 and included service on its
Executive Committee. He is an emeritus member of the Foundation Board.
Mr. Spiegel is a Life Member of the SIU Alumni Association and has been actively involved in various SIUC sponsored events over the years. In 2004, he received the Alumni Achievement Award and delivered the commencement address for the College of Liberal Arts graduation ceremony. He is an active member of the Chicago Alumni Chapter, serving on the White Sox committee, Chicagoland Golf Committee and as Chair of the Chancellor’s Golf Outing (2014 & 2015).
Mr. Spiegel is also well known for enjoying his Chicago Cubs as a beer vendor at Wrigley Field for over four decades. He and his wife Karri have 3 adult children and make their home in Buffalo Grove, IL.
